Specifier: Posen Architects

St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville, New Jersey converted a medical-surgical floor to a much-needed behavioral health unit for adolescents and adults. Posen Architects was chosen to design a treatment center which would reduce the risk for self-harm, deter contraband concealment, and maintain a residential feel.

KIRLIN’S 6” LED vandal and ligature resistant downlights with BioGard™ antimicrobial finish and IP66 sealed trim (MRV-06858) were selected for the patient rooms, bathrooms and showers. The inconspicuous downlights provided a residential ambiance and high CRI of 90+ gave a feeling of natural sunlight. New York State Office of Mental Health approved for highest risk applications,  5” LED square tamper resistant steplights protected with polycarbonate lens (MNS-05924-26) were selected to provide each room safe and secure wayfinding illumination.

The staff is very pleased to have the residential feel of round downlights throughout the Behavioral Health Units, instead of typical institutional troffers. Patients, family, and staff are reassured that the lighting supports healing without any risk of being used to do harm.
